Western Bhutan
Paro
Home to Bhutan's only international airport and the trail up to Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery.
Thimphu
Bhutan’s capital and largest town, with no traffic lights and a 51-metre bronze Buddha on the hillside above it.
Punakha
The former capital, warmer and lower than Paro or Thimphu, built around a dzong at the meeting of two rivers.
Haa Valley
A high, quiet valley over Chele La from Paro, with 7th-century temples, herding villages and buckwheat dumplings called hoentay.
Wangdue Phodrang
A 1638 dzong rebuilt after the 2012 fire, above the meeting of two rivers, and the stonemasons' village of Rinchengang across the water.
Central Bhutan
Phobjikha and Gangtey
A wide glacial valley at about 3,000 m where black-necked cranes spend the winter, below the old monastery of Gangtey.
Trongsa
The town that held the middle of the country: a great dzong above the Mangde Chhu and the watchtower museum of the Wangchuck kings.
Bumthang
Four high valleys in central Bhutan, home to some of the country's oldest temples, Pema Lingpa's birthplace and the Burning Lake.
Eastern Bhutan
Mongar
Where eastern Bhutan begins: a district town at 1,600 m, the ruins of Zhongar Dzong and Drametse, the monastery of the drum dance.
Lhuentse
The Wangchucks' ancestral valley in the far north-east: a dzong above the Kuri Chhu, the kishuthara weavers of Khoma and a 47 m Guru Rinpoche at Takila.
Trashigang
The market town of the far east: a 1659 dzong on a clifftop above two rivers, and beyond it the Brokpa highlands of Merak and Sakteng.
Trashiyangtse
A small town in Bhutan's far north-east: the white stupa of Chorten Kora by the Kholong Chhu, a college of traditional crafts and the winter crane fields of Bumdeling.
Samdrup Jongkhar
The south-eastern border town with Assam and eastern Bhutan's road entry from India, with the 1865 battle site of Dewathang in the hills above.
