Clothing

  • Layers — mornings are cold and afternoons warm, even in summer
  • A waterproof jacket
  • A warm fleece or down jacket (essential Oct–Mar)
  • Modest clothes for dzongs and temples: long sleeves, long trousers or a long skirt, and a collared shirt. No shorts, sleeveless tops or hats inside.
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the Tiger’s Nest hike

Essentials

  • Passport (valid 6+ months) and printed visa clearance letter
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat — UV is strong at altitude
  • Personal medication and altitude remedies
  • Plug adapter: Bhutan uses types D, F and G at 230 V
  • Reusable water bottle

For trekkers

Sleeping bag rated to –10 °C, trekking poles, broken-in boots, head torch and blister kit. We provide tents, mattresses and meals.

Best time to visit Bhutan

October for the mountains, February for the quiet, and a nightly fee that does not care which you pick.

Bhutan weather by region

Punakha in January is shirtsleeve weather. Phobjikha, three hours up the road, freezes at night. Here is Bhutan valley by valley, with the numbers we plan around.
